Some advice from Gen-la Jampa

If possible, find a clean and quiet place where you can engage in the meditation sessions during the retreat. Once you have found a good place in your home, you should then clean the meditation room or space, and set up a shrine with representations of Buddha’s body, speech, and mind. On the shrine, you can arrange suitable offerings.

For more information on setting up your meditation space, please see Joyful Path of Good Fortune in the chapter, ‘Preparing for Meditation’.

It is also recommended that you begin to think about your retreat boundaries that are appropriate for your particular circumstances. Maintaining retreat boundaries is a special method to reduce distracting thoughts and activities that would interfere with concentration during the meditation sessions.

Retreat boundaries will be explained briefly in the Friday introductions; however, it is suggested that you read more about this in Heart Jewel in the chapter, ‘Close Retreat’.

You should also check to make sure that you have the appropriate sadhana and book(s) for that particular week of retreat.

Finally, deeply rejoice in your good fortune in having the opportunity to engage in such a profound and meaningful start to the New Year!
